Water Polo for Indigenous Youth

The MWPA has partnered with the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council (MASRC) to offer a water polo program for Indigenous youth aged 4 - 15 years.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced, this program is for you! Led by experienced water polo coaches, our sessions provide a supportive environment for skill development.

Water polo is a combination of many sports, like swimming, basketball, soccer, team handball, and wrestling. Many of the skills and strategies those sports use, water polo combines them. Kids as young as 4 or 5 can start water polo. To begin with, this is just like swimming lessons but with a ball and goal thrown in for some extra fun.

The only requirement is that participants must be able to swim safely in the deep end-typically this means being able to complete 2-4 continuous laps without stopping.  If you're unsure of your child's swimming ability, please reach out so we can discuss and, if needed, arrange a swim evaluation.

Starts again February 6!

Benefits

  • Children understand how to play in a team, so that different children with different skills can work together to achieve a goal

  • Coordination to pass and catch the ball with one hand

  • Swimming is a core skill. This gives children an option to play a ball sport in the water which helps reinforce skills

  • Swimming is a fundamental requirement for water polo. The better a player can swim the better they will be able to play water polo.
