July 2, 2020: COVID-19 Update – Manitoba Water Polo’s ‘Return to Play’ Plan Approved

With the recent Government Phase 3 Re-Opening, Manitoba Water Polo’s initial ‘Return to Play’ plan has now been approved by the provincial authorities.

The safety of our participants and of our community continues to be our highest priority. As you see in our ‘Return to Play’ plan, there is a series of risk management and safety measures in place and it is of the utmost importance that everyone adheres to these protocols.

Water Polo Canada Statement and Action Plan – Diversity and Inclusion

(Ottawa, ON – June 22, 2020) Our athletes are our pride and strength. We have worked hard over the years to make Water Polo Canada a sport organization that we thought was safe and welcoming for everyone, all skin colours, all backgrounds, and all identities.

We now recognize that we fell short. Our actions and inactions have hurt people and athletes, included among them, one of the faces of our first Olympic women’s team Co-captain Waneek Horn-Miller, who was compelled to leave water polo before the end of her career. We sincerely apologize to her, and others who we have hurt and excluded. We are reaching out to our current and retired athletes to hear their stories so we can learn from them.

Waneek has agreed to be one of the members of a Diversity Task Force we are forming immediately. As sport leaders, we have a responsibility to take concrete steps to eliminate systemic racism and to create a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Sid Williamson

It is with great sadness that we share with you the sudden passing of Sid Williamson on June 7, 2020.

Sid played a pivotal role in growing age group water polo in Manitoba at both the club and school league levels. Her contributions to the water polo community were vast and she developed deep relationships with many people throughout her years of involvement.

Sid was known by many for her contagious positivity, generosity, and her warm greeting “Hi sweetie!” She spent countless hours volunteering, creating opportunities for both high performance and grassroots level play. She introduced many current and past Manitoba athletes to the sport through the school league and Bushido Water Polo Club.

She will be greatly missed by so many. We were lucky to have her as part of the water polo community.
